Return to Monkey Island contains a total of 39 achievements, and some of them can be quite challenging to locate. In this guide, you'll find a comprehensive explanation of how to obtain all of them.

Prelude Achievements

Pegleg - Fullfilled Your Restroom Obligations

Return to Monkey Island: Achievements Guide (2)

First, you need to unlock the outhouse door with the key that you find in the Scurvydog shack. Then, pick up the fake piece of eight from the ground in the outhouse. It's a slug! Return to the Scurvydog shack and give the slug to the counter guy. Re-enter the shack and return the pegleg to its original place.

Lucky Duck - Lucky Duck Shared Your Luck

Go to the park and pick up the four-leaf clover from the field. After that, go to the pond and use the four-leaf clover item on the duck that is swimming around.

Part I Achievements

Part One - Started Part One

To obtain this achievement, you must complete the Prelude. If you have already completed the game, you should already have this achievement.

Fan Service - Convinced Cobb to Tell You About LOOM

Return to Monkey Island: Achievements Guide (4)

To get the achievement, you have to speak to Cobb, who shows up at the Scumm bar once you've talked to the Voodoo Lady. Persuade him to tell you about Loom by asking him repeatedly.

Cartography Nerd - Thoroughly Examined All Of Wally’s Stock

This achievement requires you to examine all 18 maps in Wally’s shop in Part I or Part IV of the game. You can only access Wally’s shop after you have spoken with the Iron Rose on the docks and seen a cutscene with the Voodoo Lady and Conrad.

Mop Heist - Attempted To Steal The Cook’s Mop

You have to try to steal the cook’s mop in the Scumm bar. You need to distract the cook by giving him the recipe book from the governor’s mansion, then pick up his mop and attempt to leave with it. This can only be done when the clean-looking pirate is in the Scumm bar. Otherwise, the cook will not accept the recipe book.

Hey Wait! - Freed Otis

You need to get the monocle from Wally’s map shop on Low Street. Then use the double monocle to examine the lock on Otis’ cell and write down the serial number. Bragging - Told Everyone On Mêlée Island That You Are Looking For The Secret

This achievement requires you to tell 15 characters on Mêlée Island that you are looking for the secret of Monkey Island. Some characters are only available at certain points in Part I or Part IV. Here are the 15 characters you need to talk to:

  • Lookout: He is the first person you meet. You will automatically tell him about your quest as part of the story.
  • The new pirate leaders in the Scumm Bar: They are near the fireplace.
  • Pirate 1 in the Scumm Bar: She sits at the keg near the entrance.
  • Pirate 2 in the Scumm Bar: She sits at a nearby table
  • Group of pirates in the Scumm Bar: They are standing near the other two pirates.
  • Cobb in the Scumm Bar: He is the guy with the "Ask me about LOOM" badge.
  • The Cook in the Scumm Bar: He is in the kitchen, behind the bar.
  • Voodoo Lady: She is in the International House of Mojo, in the town.
  • Wally: He is in the map shop, across the street from the International House of Mojo.
  • Otis: He is in the jail, on the High Street.
  • Stan: He is also in the jail, with Otis.
  • Locke Smith: He is in the locksmith shop, next to the jail.
  • Carla: She is in the governor’s mansion.
  • Conrad Lee: He is in the museum.
  • The old pirate leaders: They are either on the Low Street, in Part I, or in the Fish Shop, in Part IV. To find them in Part I, you have to enable the Writer’s Cut option in the settings.

Mop Top - Got Hired With All Four Mop Heads

To get this achievement, you need to get hired with all four different mop heads. You have to make a mop with each mop head and show it to the ship’s quartermaster. The easiest way is to save your game before making the mop and reload it for each combination. You can find the mop heads in these places:

  • String: on the pier behind the Scumm Bar
  • Shrunken Head: in the Voodoo Lady’s shop
  • Stuffed toy: in the Governor’s Mansion
  • Sponge: in the shipyard

Part II Achievements

Part Two - Started Part Two

To obtain this achievement, you must complete Part I. If you have already completed the game, you should already have this achievement.

Super Swabbie - Swabbed The Hold Twenty Times

To do this, you need to grab the mop and clean the hold twenty times. Gullet will keep making a mess and telling you that you missed a spot. Just keep on mopping until the achievement shows up.

Neat Freak - Listed Every Mess On The First Swab’s Report

This is obtained by listing every mess on the first swab’s report. You need to find eight messes, but you can only report five at a time. Therefore, you must save your game before finding any mess, report five, then reload the game and report the other three. Here are the locations of the eight messes:

  • Grease spots in the hold: you need to create at least one with the mop and the grease at the beginning of Part II
  • Greasy porthole in the hold
  • Splattered ghost chicken glop in the hold: you need to feed the chicken on the top right of the hold with some chicken feed, leave the hold and come back
  • Entire galley is an unsanitary disaster: ship's galley
  • Ghostly vermin infestation belowdecks: ghost rat outside LeChuck’s cabin
  • Unsecured trash (empty crates) on upper deck: used potion supplies
  • Potion stain on upper deck: spilled potion
  • Unsightly mess obstructing ship’s rudder: Gullet stuck down the back of the ship underwater

Hot Headed - Braved The Scorched Alaska

Return to Monkey Island: Achievements Guide (12)

You need to make Putra create the hot Scorched Alaska dessert and then try to eat it four times. On the fourth attempt, Guybrush will take a bite and you will get the achievement.

Part III Achievements

Part Three - Started Part Three

To obtain this achievement, you must complete Part II. If you have already completed the game, you should already have this achievement.

Not Bitter - Got To The Heart Of The Problem

Return to Monkey Island: Achievements Guide (13)

When you arrive on Monkey Island, examine the tree on the beach with “L + E” scratched into it. Keep examining until you see the kick option. Then, kick the tree five times to unlock the achievement.

Dead Dead Dead - Died For Real

Return to Monkey Island: Achievements Guide (14)

This achievement can be obtained during Part II, Part III or Part IV. The fastest and easiest is at the beginning of Part III because you can advance time by 2 minutes by moving left or right between screens. Keep moving until your timer runs out. You'll have to do this 3 times.

Tight Ship - Decked Out The Sea Monkey II With Spooky Skulls

Return to Monkey Island: Achievements Guide (15)

To earn this achievement, you must gather all six skulls from the Giant Monkey Head and Murray from the rubber tree stumps before you fix the ship and depart. The achievement will be unlocked when you reach Mêlée Island at the start of Part IV.

Part IV Achievements

Part Four - Started Part Four

To obtain this achievement, you must complete Part III. If you have already completed the game, you should already have this achievement.

Patient Citizen - Waited Patiently To See Carla

Return to Monkey Island: Achievements Guide (16)

You need to wait in line for the governor’s mansion and don’t move for about 3 minutes.

Relief Pitcher - Offered To Donate To The Earthquake Relief

Return to Monkey Island: Achievements Guide (17)

To get this achievement, you need to offer to donate to the earthquake relief fund that Carla is collecting. You can do this by giving her your coin purse after talking to her about the earthquake.

Ahoy There - Ahoy! More Than Twenty Times

Return to Monkey Island: Achievements Guide (18)

To unlock the achievement, sail to the adrift ship on the sea map where you’ll encounter some scurvy paranoid pirates. When you first see them, select the “Ahoy!” dialogue option 20 times until the achievement unlocks. Remember that this achievement is missable because after you retrieve the flag from their ship, the pirates go inside and you can no longer talk to them.

Promise Keeper - Did Gullet A Favor

Return to Monkey Island: Achievements Guide (19)

This achievement only works when playing the game on Hard Mode. This will grant you access to the museum in Part IV. In the previous part, you obtained a book of poetry from Gullet to board LeChuck’s ship. Now, head over to the Pirate Museum on Mêlée Island. There, give the book of poetry to Conrad.

Dental Samaritan - Gave Stan His Toothbrush

Return to Monkey Island: Achievements Guide (20)

Visit Stan’s shack and pick up his toothbrush (the shack will be destroyed at this point). Once you're able to visit Stan, head to the Ice Quarry on Brrr Muda Island and give the toothbrush to him.

On The Lam - Let The Lumpsucker Escape

Return to Monkey Island: Achievements Guide (21)

Head over to the Fish Shop located on High Street. There, you’ll notice a peculiar fish on the floor that moves closer to the door every time you enter the shop. Your task is to be persistent — keep entering and exiting the shop until the lumpsucker finally escapes. It’ll take approximately 30 cycles of entry and exit.

Flag Facsimile - Performed The Ole Switcheroo With The Replica Flag

Return to Monkey Island: Achievements Guide (22)

This achievement only works on Hard Mode. When you get the flag from the adrift ship, replace it with a replica flag from the museum on Mêlée Island. You have to do this before stealing the real flag from the museum.

Trophy Fisher - Became A Prize Chum

Return to Monkey Island: Achievements Guide (23)

Visit the Fish shop on High Street. Depending on the difficulty level you’re playing on:

  • Casual Mode: examine the goldfish Sushi next to the door, twice.
  • Hard Mode: examine Bella Fisher’s flag hanging from the ceiling on the left, twice.

Ask the old pirate leaders to join the Chums. You’ll receive a fishing lure. Show the lure to the following 5 members of the Chums to receive advice on storytelling techniques:

  • Locke Smith: located on the High Street.
  • Pirate lady: she's next to the docks, in front of the Scumm Bar.
  • Elaine: she's on Scurvy Island.
  • Apple Bob: hanging upside down on the upper deck of LeChuck’s ship.
  • Prison Guard: he's guarding the entrance to the Ice Quarry on Brr Muda.

After learning the secrets of angler storytelling, return to Mêlée Island and show the lure to any of the three old pirate leaders. Use the advice you got to tell them the story.

Deep Sea Diver - Explored The Entire Ocean Floor

Return to Monkey Island: Achievements Guide (24)

To unlock this achievement, explore the ocean floor until you’ve encountered seven distinct locations. If you’re playing on hard mode, acquire the pufferfish from the Fish Shop first. Then, randomly dive into the ocean using the ship anchor (remember to inhale the pufferfish on hard mode before diving). Keep exploring until you’ve witnessed all six variants of the seafloor. Once you’ve achieved this, dive into the Bella Fisher shipwreck.

Bookworm - Found All The Copies of ‘At The End Of The Plank’

Return to Monkey Island: Achievements Guide (25)

Examine all 5 copies of the purple-covered book titled “At The End Of The Plank”. These copies are scattered throughout the game:

  • At the fish shop (once it opens).
  • In Locke Smith’s shop on the right.
  • In the governor’s mansion, inside the bookcase (purple book).
  • In the Ice Castle on Brrr Muda Island (before you get the Queen's key).
  • In Herman Toothrot’s cave on Terror Island (before you steal the key)

Part V Achievements

Part Five - Started Part Five

To obtain this achievement, you must complete Part IV. If you have already completed the game, you should already have this achievement.

Free Wally - Rescued Wally From Monkey Island

Return to Monkey Island: Achievements Guide (26)

In Part II or Part III, examine the shackles at the front of LeChuck’s ship using the pair of monocles to obtain the serial number. In Part IV, give Locke Smith on Mêlée Island the serial number to get a key made. Use the key to free Wally and unlock the achievement in Part V.

I Don’t Believe - Returned To The World You Know

Return to Monkey Island: Achievements Guide (27)

After you get the keys from Stan, go back to the alley where you came from and use the keys to open the door. Go through the door and climb back up the monkey head to the top.

Cogg Island - Found Cogg Island

Return to Monkey Island: Achievements Guide (28)

To get this achievement, you need to do the following steps:

  • Find the trivia card that asks “Where is Cogg Island located?” and write down the correct answer. The answer is a random coordinate (for example, K.3, D.14, etc). You can only see the correct answer if you have finished the game once. Otherwise, it will say “Somewhere”.
  • Start the game in Part IV. You can use a saved game or start from the beginning.
  • Sail to the coordinate that you wrote down on the sea map and dive down using the anchor.
  • Go to the clearing in the centre of the island and read the sign.

Speed Runner - Reached The End In 2 Hours Or Less

To unlock this achievement, you’ll need to complete the game in 2 hours or less. Here’s a few tips:

  • Play on Casual: Start the game in Casual mode.
  • Skip Dialog: If you don't know how, check the Controls menu.
  • Skip Cutscenes: Use the Escape key on the PC.
  • Move Faster: Use double-click on the PC to make Guybrush go faster or double-tap on mobile. On the consoles check the Controls menu to learn how to do it.
  • Choose the last line: Opt for the last line during most dialogues to progress or end conversations faster.
